program benefits
RHA's mobile dental programs for schools are designed to deliver
important value to our nation's school children. We've
provided the following information to help articulate both the need
for service and its many benefits. Please click on the
appropriate subject below.
The Need
For School-Based Mobile Dental Services
There has never been a greater need to deliver dental services to
underprivileged school children. The following information
better explains this need.
-
The U.S. Surgeon General has
recommended school-based dental clinics as an effective venue
for
providing dental care to children, especially those at poverty
level
-
80% of the children on Medicaid
do not routinely see the dentist as needed
-
45% of these children have
substantial and active caries
-
Children eligible for Medicaid
are 3-5x more likely to have untreated decay
-
The US Surgeon General reported
recently that 4 million children in America go to school each
day in acute dental pain and said "a lack of proper dental care
is the most insidious healthcare problem facing our children."
-
"Dental disease remains a
chronic, progressive and destructive public health problem with
children"
-
Even though 20% of the children
on Medicaid receive basic exams many of them never receive the
follow up care and treatment they need.
-
Dental disease contributes to
learning challenges, endocarditis, diabetes, failure to thrive,
cardio- pulmonary failure and stroke
-
Loss of teeth results in a loss of personal dignity and effects
self esteem.
