Both the CDC and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)
support school-based oral health services to prevent and reduce the
burden of oral diseases in children. Our mobile school dental
programs (BIG SMILES) are designed for the benefit of under-served
children without ready access to dental services. This program also
serves children in group homes and residential treatment programs.
Along with the support of the "One More
Child" Foundation, BIG SMILES has met with enormous
success in reaching low-income children who have never had dental
care before and who would be unlikely to obtain it otherwise.
The BIG SMILES school dental program collaborates with local
dentists to bring comprehensive dental services to the school
or group home, helping to reduce absenteeism and barriers to
learning.
